Documentary filmmaker Mark Moskowitz turns literary sleuth in this marvelous tale of a vanished novelist. Enchanted by the 1972 novel The Stones of Summer, Moskowitz was surprised to discover no subsequnt trace of the author, Dow Mossman. This led him on a roundabout search for the man, including nicely freewheeling detours to talk about writing with critic Leslie Fiedler and editor Robert Gottlieb, among many distinguished others. Although Moskowitz’s detective format is somewhat labored, the tru story of Mossman’s retreat from writing is fascinating, and the joy of books (and talking about books) is always front and center. The suspense of Moskowitz’s qust becomes real, and Stone Reader contains moments that would be implausible if they were in a fiction film–except, of course, they aren’t made up. Bibliophiles of every stripe need to see this movie; and if you’re not a book lover already, it may make you one. –Robert Horton

While history books often use the 1921 Sacco and Vanzetti case as an example of justice falling victim to the bigotry of the times, this HBO movie–based on a turn-of-the-century New Orleans trial–provides a far more sobering example. Vendetta opens with a montage of black-and-white photos of immigrants arriving in the U.S., accompanied by an audio track of anti-immigrant invective that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Christopher Walken lends his always unsettling presence as the city’s largest cotton exporter and mastermind of a plot to take over the docks from the Italian immigrants who run them. When police chief David Hennessy (Clancy Brown) refuses to go along with the plan, he’s shot and killed, and a random group of Italian produce merchants are accused of the murder. The trial and its appalling aftermath are portrayed with a realistic vehemence that may make some viewers flinch. Director Nicholas Meyer has coaxed powerful performances from a cast of mostly unknown actors, most notable among these is Alessandro Colla, who makes his debut as 15-year-old Gaspare Marchesi and provides the film’s few smiles. The pacing makes Vendetta hard to follow at first, but as the subplots begin to converge like cars speeding toward the same intersection, the film compels you to keep watching until the inevitable conclusion. –Larisa Lomacky Moore

By 1981, when this production was taped for Canadian television, Joan Sutherland’s voice was unqustionably past its prime. But even in its decline, that voice remained something quite special, and the role of the troubled Druid priestess Norma was one of her specialties. A substantial advantage in this recording is the presence at the podium of her husband and coach, Richard Bonynge, who had a deep understanding of the strengths and limitations of her voice and stage persona. His pacing and balance give the voice opportunities to challenge, at least momentarily, the ravages of time.

Lotfi Mansouri, one of the great operatic entrepreneurs of the late 20th century, assembled a first-class supporting cast for Sutherland–most notably Tatiana Troyanos, to whose memory this video is dedicated. The performance of Troyanos in the role of the younger and equally troubled priestess Adalgisa is outstanding and would make this disc worth having even without its documentation of Sutherland. As far as it is possible to determine, this is the only video opera appearance of tenor Francisco Ortiz. On the basis of his performance as the Roman officer Pollione, he seems to have deserved more attention. Bass Justino Diaz gives a sterling performance as the old Druid Oroveso, and this production is, overall, preferable to the earlier Australian Opera video of Sutherland’s Norma. –Joe McLellan

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagus Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you’ll have something resembling Dead Man’s Chest, a bombastic sequl that’s enjoyable as long as you don’t think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack’s compass, which is linked to a key that’s linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people’s souls. If you’re already confused, don’t worry–plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man’s Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don’t expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.

Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he’s still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgard appears as Will’s undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards–and he’s still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. –Ellen A. Kim

When evil aliens who have tether balls dangling from their crotches kill her parents, she moves in with the nutty Aasu sisters, who command useless superpowers. As in Excel Saga, there are some funny parodies: an old fish becomes the bejeweled sword Poemi uses when she transforms into her super-guise of Puni Puni Poemi, and adoring Futaba Aasu spoofs Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura. Unfortunately everything is pitched at a breakneck pace, with the actors hysterically screaming their lines over “fan service” nudie shots. The results are more exhausting than amusing.
